Dowel bar prices in Canada depend first on which kind of dowel you mean, then on the bar's size, length, coating and fabrication, how many you need, and whether they come loose or in baskets. A deformed rebar dowel for a foundation is priced much like any other cut or bent rebar. A smooth, epoxy-coated pavement dowel set in a welded basket carries several more steps of work on top of the steel.
We don't publish dowel bar prices or a price list, because steel and coating costs move and every order differs. This guide covers what goes into the price so you can request a quote that is accurate the first time and compare quotes fairly.
Two kinds of dowel bars
"Dowel bar" means two different products, and searches for dowel bar prices mix them up.
Rebar dowels are deformed reinforcing bars used to tie one pour of concrete to the next: footing to wall, wall to slab, existing concrete to new. They are made to CSA G30.18 like other rebar, commonly 15M on residential work, with larger sizes where the design calls for them, and they are often bent into L-shapes or hooked. Their job is to bond to the concrete on both sides and transfer force across the joint.
Pavement dowel bars are smooth, plain round bars placed across transverse joints in concrete pavements and slabs. Half of each dowel is debonded so the slab can open and close at the joint with temperature, while the dowel still carries wheel loads from one slab to the next. They are measured in millimetres of diameter, and 32 mm (1.25 in) is a common highway size, typically around 450 mm long. Thinner slabs and industrial floors may use smaller round, square or plate dowels.
Our post on dowel bars vs rebar explains the difference in more depth. The price drivers overlap, but not completely.
What drives the price of rebar dowels
For deformed rebar dowels, the price is built up much like any cut and bent rebar order:
- Bar size and length. Weight sets the material cost. A 15M bar weighs 1.570 kg per metre and a 20M bar 2.355 kg per metre, so longer and larger dowels cost more steel per piece.
- Straight or bent. A straight dowel is a cut piece. An L-dowel or hooked dowel adds a bending operation, and bend dimensions have to be right for the bar to sit correctly in the form.
- Pieces per tonne. Dowel orders are many short pieces. Short pieces mean more cuts, more bends, more tags and more handling for each tonne, which raises the cost per tonne compared with long straight bar.
- Grade. Most dowels are Grade 400W. A specified 500W or weldable bar may price differently.
- Coating. Epoxy-coated, galvanized, stainless or GFRP dowels are specialty items; see below.
- Tagging and bundling. Dowels tagged by mark and bundled by location save time sorting on site.
The length of a rebar dowel comes from the drawings or the embedment and lap requirements, not from a rule of thumb. See how long rebar dowels should be.
What drives the price of pavement dowels
Smooth pavement dowels go through more processes, and each one shows up in the price.
Steel and diameter. Weight still sets the base. Because a dowel is solid round bar, weight rises quickly with diameter: a 32 mm bar weighs about 6.31 kg per metre, and a 38 mm bar about 8.90 kg per metre. A 450 mm dowel at 32 mm is roughly 2.8 kg of steel.
Cutting and end preparation. Pavement dowels have to slide in the concrete, so ends need to be cut square and free of burrs that would lock them in place. Saw-cut or sheared and deburred ends cost more than a rough cut.
Coating. Most road and highway dowels are epoxy coated for corrosion protection. In Ontario, MTO's concrete pavement specification refers dowel and tie bars to OPSS 1440 for the steel, OPSS 1442 for the epoxy coating and OPSS 1441 for load transfer assemblies. In the US, epoxy-coated pavement dowels are covered by AASHTO M 254 and ASTM A1078. Coating is a separate plant process, and coated dowels need careful handling and touch-up. Galvanized, stainless steel and GFRP dowels are also used where the owner specifies them; epoxy-coated vs galvanized dowel bars compares the two most common coatings.
Bond breaker. The debonded half is coated with a bond breaker so it can slide. Ontario's pavement specification calls for dowels and load transfer devices to be shop coated with bond breaker, except dowels installed into existing concrete.
Baskets (load transfer assemblies). Dowels for paving are often supplied welded into wire baskets that hold them level and parallel at the right height and spacing. A basket adds wire, welding and a bulky item to ship. Paving with an automatic dowel bar inserter uses loose dowels instead.
Specification compliance. Public road work usually comes with material certificates, testing and inspection requirements. Meeting them adds paperwork and sometimes lead time.
Order-level factors
Whatever type of dowel you are buying, these change the final number:
- Quantity. Set-up costs for cutting, coating and basket production are spread over the order. Small orders carry more of them per piece.
- Mixed sizes and lengths. Several dowel types in one order mean more set-ups than one size in large quantity.
- Delivery. Distance, site access and the number of drops. Baskets take up truck space out of proportion to their weight.
- Schedule. Coated and basket-assembled dowels involve outside processes, so lead time matters. Rush orders can cost more.
- Market timing. Steel prices move with scrap, energy, trade measures and the dollar. See rebar price trends for the current picture.
Per piece, per kg or per tonne
Dowel prices are quoted in different units, and that causes confusion when comparing:
| Pricing unit | Common for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Per piece | Cut pavement dowels and standard L-dowels | Diameter, length, coating and end prep all stated |
| Per basket or assembly | Paving dowel baskets | Number of dowels per basket, height, spacing, coating |
| Per kg or per tonne | Larger rebar dowel orders within a bar list | Whether fabrication is included or extra |
To compare a per-piece price with a per-weight price, convert using the weight of one dowel. For rebar dowels, multiply length by the kg per metre for the bar size; our rebar price by size post lists weights for 10M to 25M.
How to get an accurate dowel quote
Send the supplier enough to price exactly what you need:
- Type: deformed rebar dowel or smooth pavement dowel.
- Size: bar size (15M, 20M) or diameter in mm.
- Length and shape: straight, L-shape or hooked, with dimensions.
- Grade and coating: including the standard named in your specification.
- Quantity: by mark or by location.
- Loose or in baskets: with basket height and spacing if needed.
- Delivery: site address, timing and whether deliveries are phased.
If you only have structural drawings, send them and let the supplier do the take-off, so the dowel count and lengths come from the details rather than a guess.
Getting dowels priced
We fabricate rebar dowels, straight or bent, cut and tagged to your bar list, and deliver across the GTA and Ontario. For smooth pavement dowels or baskets, tell us what your specification calls for and we will let you know what we can supply. We don't supply epoxy-coated dowels.
Send your drawings or dowel list for a free take-off and quote, or see our rebar products, including fabricated dowels and stirrups.
Frequently asked questions
How are dowel bars priced?
Usually per piece for cut dowels of a set diameter and length, or by weight for larger rebar dowel orders. The rate depends on the bar, any coating, fabrication such as bends or end preparation, whether baskets are included, quantity and delivery.
How much does a 32 mm dowel bar weigh?
A 32 mm smooth round steel bar weighs about 6.31 kg per metre, so a 450 mm dowel weighs roughly 2.8 kg before coating. Weight is the starting point for pricing, but coating and end preparation add to it.
Why are pavement dowels more expensive than rebar of the same weight?
Pavement dowels are smooth, cut to exact lengths with clean ends, usually epoxy coated and coated with bond breaker, and often supplied welded into baskets. Each step adds cost on top of the steel.
Is there a dowel bar price list?
Suppliers rarely publish one because steel and coating prices move. Ask for a quote on your exact diameter, length, coating, quantity and delivery, and check how long it is held.
